What will the X4M have under the hood? The move that makes the most sense is for the X4M to share the M3/M4 drivetrain. That means 425 horsepower, 406 pound-feet of torque, from the twin turbocharged S55 3.0 liter inline-6 motor. The question would be whether BMW would be able to give it a dual clutch transmission and all wheel drive as they currently do not have any dual clutch all wheel drive M models. The X5M and X6M both have automatic transmissions unlike the M5 and M6.
To rival the Macan a dual clutch with all wheel drive would be necessary. Additionally, BMW would have an SUV that could answer the challenge of the Audi RS Q3 and the Mercedes GLA45 AMG.
Keep in mind, this is not 100% confirmed as the report from Car and Driver does not quote any official BMW sources. Hopefully Car and Driver is not just trolling for hits. BMW officially went on record last year stating they feared an X4M would eat into X6 sales. The arrival of the Macan may have just changed someone's mind. An X4M appears inevitable.
