    • F1 2017 - Mercedes-AMG mulls strategy changes as Ferrari picks up their second win of the year in Bahrain

Things are not going exactly as planned for Mercedes-AMG in 2017 as it is Ferrari that is in first place. Not only in the constructor's championship but Sebastian Vettel is in first place for the driver's championship following his victory in Bahrain.

What happened? Well, things looked good early as Valtteri Bottas took the pole followed by Hamilton. Unfortunately for Bottas his pace during the race was not quick enough and he was ordered to allow Hamilton to pass.

Hamilton was indeed quicker but a costly mistake entering the pits caused an assessment of a 5 second penalty. Stewards deemed Hamilton slowed down too much which held up Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull. To his credit, Hamilton owned up to the mistake.

Mercedes-AMG is considering making Bottas the de facto number two driver. What does this mean? It means they will concentrate on Hamilton having the lead and picking up points. There would not be open competition between the teammates as there was between Rosberg and Hamilton last year.

Obviously this is very early in the season with only three races in the books. However, it is great to see a real battle early on for points with Ferrari providing a serious challenge.

Race highlights and results from Bahrain Grand Prix are below. The Russian Grand Prix on April 30th is up next.
