    • 2018 Car and Driver Lightning Lap Results - The 911 GT2 RS tops a strong field including the Ford GT, McLaren 720S, and Corvette ZR1

Car and Driver deserves quite a bit of credit here. Their field has all the cars you would want to see in action. From the 991.2 GT2 RS, Ford GT, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, McLaren 720S, to the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 they covered the big boys.

Here is the entire list in alphabetical order:

Impressive list, right? The only nitpicking would be the lack of an M3 CS, M2 Competition, or Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Alfa Romeo withdrew a Stelvio Quadrifoglio at the last minute. That certainly proves there is some Ferrari DNA at Alfa Romeo. They withdrew a Giulia Quadrifoglio too.

The course is well known. VIR (Virginia International Raceway) Grand Course:

Ok, so you want to see the laptimes?

The GT2 RS is king but there are some interesting results. The F90 M5 overachieves for its weight. Props to BMW for focusing on handling and not just putting down power in a straight line.

Mercedes-AMG killed it with the GLC63S. To have an SUV lap the way it did is incredible. It topped Audi's RS3 and RS5. How does an RS5 or RS3 lose to a GLC63S and significantly so at that?

The Ford Mustang GT Performance Package Level 2 is easily offering the best bang for the buck.

Once again though the GT2 RS is the best in all the land. Porsche raised the bar and the 911 continues on setting records and dominating tracks worldwide. Finishing over two seconds ahead of the McLaren 720S is incredible. Oh, and an honorable mention to Chevrolet and the ZR1 which finished in second place.

The ZR1 is clearly the most car for the money.

        A. Great freaking lineup this year.

        B. That GT2 RS is playing on a different level against some incredible competition. WOW.

        C. Nice showing by the Mustang. Its punching well above its weight class.

Also - TT RS outlapped the GLC 63... might want to correct your article.

you know what would be a cool twist to this, let each oem send one of there factory drivers and show the different times. Best time they can get out of the car with factory driver, and cars with same driver same day. Because I think the top 3 car for sure be shuffled around

The Ford GT was quite a bit slower than the first time they tested it at VIR for LL - it dropped from a 2:43 flat. The Mustang is darn impressive. Faster than a SS 1LE now. The GT2 RS is just bonkers.

Kind of interesting though. The CTR at 3:03 and the Accord at 3:18. They have the same engine and the accord is detuned to run on 87 octane if I recall correctly. I know Terry has come out with the JB4 for the Civic. I’m curious as to how they would compete with a simple piggy back.

i got you but for this particular test the accord is completely out of place

My bet is that it is there because Honda paid for it to be there.

Yes the gt was. different drivers have different strengths, for example look at a car like the gtr, not every driver is used to getting everything out of an awd car. The factory driver would be a crazy twist plus the competition would be entertaining

Most likely they did. I am also curious how the Acura RDX performs since it is the same engine but with the SH AWD that the CTR is missing. I would have rather seen that in place of the accord.

The ford gt is an embarrassment, the zr1 is cool but I doubt you can get much more out of it to lower track times which is why chevy is going mid engine again(don't forget about the prototype they made in the 90s) and the gt2rs is simply phenomenal. What's the overall lap record? Does it belong to the viper acr or 918?

The record holder was the Ford GT. Last year it did 2:43, i don't know why it was 2 seconds slower this year though.

The GT2 RS is the record holder on this configuration though:

The Lightning Laps are garbage. They are done by different drivers, some of which are just editors of C&D. Watch the videos, the driver names are listed before the lap starts.

Also years of these times where done at VIR prior to resurfacing.

So many inconsistencies to truly be able compare the cars lap times.

This can be said for all lap records at all tracks. I still wish manufacturers weren't scared and took on glickenhaus' challenge to have a major time attack challenge at the ring at the time to eliminate as many variables as possible.

It can be said about Car&Driver and their worthless Lighning Laps every year. They have drivers in each car with completely different skill levels. Some just editors of the magazine.

Motor Trend does it right during their yearly Best Drivers Car test. Same day testing, with their long term professional driver.

Big hitters from this years Motor Trend Best Driver's Car competition.(GT2 RS set a Laguna Seca production car record.)

        Laguna Seca(driver: Randy Pobst)
        GT2 RS - 1:28.30
        720S - 1:29.78
        Huracan Performante - 1:30.00
        C7 ZR1 1LE - 1:32.46
