    • 2020 Porsche 911 or 992 generation engine changes - PDK2, Higher compression, piezo injectors, upgraded intercooler, new manifolds

The 992 generation Porsche 911 remains fairly similar to the 991.2 generation. Visually, it takes on some 993 styling cues and all vehicles will be widebody. The major changes come under the skin as is per usual when a new 911 hits.

The 992 utilizes the same basic 9A2B6 3.0 engine but there are some changes. The compression ratio is bumped to 10.5:1 from 10.0:1. Why? Porsche seems to be further trying to improve response and reduce boost pressure.

The Carrera S gets the GTS turbos and the same 450 horsepower output but at less boost. The power comes at 16.1 psi instead of 18 psi. The Carrera keeps its turbos and gets less boost. Output goes to 385.

Comparison of 991.2 and 992.1 specs:

      9A2 3.0 991.2 Carrera

      Horsepower: 370
      Torque: 332 lb-ft
      Boost Pressure: 13.1 psi
      Bore x Stroke: 91mm x 76.4mm
      Redline: 7500 rpm
      Compression Ratio: 10.0:1
      Intercooler: Air to Air
      Turbos: 49mm compressor/45mm turbine

      9A2 3.0 992.1 Carrera

      Horsepower: ~385
      Torque: ~350 lb-ft
      Boost Pressure: ~11 psi
      Bore x Stroke: 91mm x 76.4mm
      Redline: 7500 rpm
      Compression Ratio: 10.5:1
      Intercooler: Air to Air
      Turbos: 49mm compressor/45mm turbine

      9A2 3.0 991.2 Carrera S

      Horsepower: 420
      Torque: 369 lb-ft
      Boost Pressure: 16.0 psi
      Bore x Stroke: 91mm x 76.4mm
      Redline: 7500 rpm
      Compression Ratio: 10.0:1
      Intercooler: Air to Air
      Turbos: 51mm compressor/45mm turbine

      9A2 3.0 992.1 Carrera S

      Horsepower: 450
      Torque: 405 lb-ft
      Boost Pressure: 16.0 psi
      Bore x Stroke: 91mm x 76.4mm
      Redline: 7500 rpm
      Compression Ratio: 10.5:1
      Intercooler: Air to Air
      Turbos: 55mm compressor/48mm turbine

The GTS will go to some larger turbo setup and it will be interesting to see if it utilizes the stock housings or not. The good news here is the BoostAddict turbo upgrade will carry over for the 992 Carrera and Carrera S.

Porsche is changing the intercooler setup to one large single piece. This central piece is in the center under the wing rather than the 991.2 rear fender setup. It is also 12% larger getting better airflow.

The 991.2 steel headers are replaced by new iron units said to flow better. We will have to wait to see the design but Porsche did not change the design for fun.

The fuel system remains largely the same except for new piezo injectors.

The transmission is a new PDK 2 setup. The manual remains the same. As for what changes in the PDK 2, it is now an 8-speed and more compact. It seems the design is preparing for an electric motor so a hybrid 911 is likely on the way with the 992.2 facelift.

PDK 2 is based on the Panamera unit and has four shafts rather than two. BoostAddict just wonders if the 911 Turbo will get a similar unit and how strong PDK 2 will be. If an electric motor is coming, it will have to be able to take tremendous torque.

The 992 will launch this November at the LA Auto Show and BoostAddict will be there to bring you the details.

I‘d love the widebody, and time will tell how the rest is like.
