    • What makes for a better sports car, the Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang or Porsche the 2020 911 (992) Carrera S?

The Shelby GT350 is in another comparison shootout hot on the heels of Car and Driver's best $60k sports car comparison. The GT350 won that comparison and MotorTrend has it punching up a weight class taking on the brand new 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

The GT350 is out of its league in this comparison though. Not to say it does not offer fun factor and aspects the Carrera S does not which it does. The GT350 is really more in the vein of a 911 GT3 with the high revving naturally aspirated motor and track oriented focus.

The Carrera S has a much smaller 3.0 liter flat-6 making much less power, at least on paper, than the 5.2 liter Voodoo V8. Turbos are a wonderful thing though and the much lighter Carrera S is the much faster car.

Not that 3413 pounds is exactly light for the Carrera S but it is over 400 pounds less than the GT350. On top of that, the Carrera S benefits from a PDK dual clutch transmission and having most of its weight on the rear.

      0-60:

      Carrera S: 3.0
      GT350: 4.0

      1/4 mile:

      Carrera S: 11.2 @ 123.8
      GT350: 12.3 @ 117.0

The Carrera S easily wins every metric except for C02 emissions. The difference over a 2.2 mile roadcourse is a hardly believable 11.3 seconds between the two cars. Massive.

The Mustang is on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and it still just gets trounced.

The Porsche is more than twice the price and it shows in the performance. Its steering, braking, technology, skidpad, fuel economy, you name it, it's better.

What the Mustang has is character. With a manual transmission and a high revving naturally aspirated V8 it actually offers something the Porsche can not. While the Porsche wins is it is twice as much fun for the money? No. In that respect, the cars are shockingly close.

This shows the value difference which is important.

I'd like to see the GT350R too but it really wouldn't have changed much as it would still get creamed.
