    • Independent vs. manufacturer Nurburgring testing - Sport Auto 2018 911 GT2 RS Nurburgring Nordschleife Supertest 6:58.28

It is important to distinguish manufacturer Nurburgring times from independently tested Nurburgring laptimes. We put more stock in test numbers from those who do not have a horse in the race and are not trying to market with the test numbers.

That means Sport Auto Supertest results are held in much higher esteem as they are an independent publication. It is difficult to explain to your average enthusiast why this matters and why times with the same car can vary so wildly.

Porsche set a new production car record with the 991.2 GT2 RS with a 6:47.3 Nurburgring laptime. Sport Auto managed 'only' a 6:58.52. Essentially, they are 11 seconds behind Porsche.

That is not surprising. However, you will see people debate on forums citing the quicker time from Porsche. If Porsche never ran their time, the Sport Auto result would be used as evidence of what the GT2 RS is capable of and some random idiot out there would claim the less powerful GT3 RS is faster around the track because Porsche got a 6:56.4 out of it.

It is an easily fallacy to commit. A time is set and people think that time can not change or is set in stone. Porsche factory drivers are the best in the world and paid very, very well. Their job is to lap the Nurburgring as quickly as possible or they will be replaced. Porsche makes sure the car is set perfectly and can rent out the entire track if need be for a test run.

The Sport Auto time is a more realistic representation of what a person can actually hit although your average driver will still be pretty far off from breaking the 7-minute barrier with a GT2 RS.

Also, keep in mind manufacturers lie and cheat. It happens all the time. Ferrari cheats so often there is no way of knowing when they are telling the truth.

The point is, times and conditions vary as do test cars. Don't fall into the trap of thinking all tests are created equal.

Porsche will spend days doing laps and gathering data, then head out and put it all together. Speaking of Porsche, there are estimates based off of these data gathering sessions that their 919 Evo will lap it in under 5 minutes!!

The name of the game in journalism is to create controversy, a scandal, attempt to paint themselves as the bearer of truth.

They're good at two of the three.

You’re on drugs if you think the 919 - in any configuration outside of strapping on rocket engines - can lap the Nordschleife over 1:11.13 faster than Bellof’s 956.

Sub 6? Very possible. Sub 5? You’re dreaming.
